A match-worn football shirt is both a textile and a historical object. Poor storage can fade colours, crack prints, and invite mould. Good storage protects emotional and financial value.
Core preservation rules
1. Avoid direct sunlight — UV fades dyes and weakens fabric.
2. Control humidity — aim for a stable, dry environment; avoid damp garages and attics.
3. Skip harsh washing — aggressive cycles can destroy match evidence and heat-pressed numbers.
4. Support the shirt — use padded hangers or archival folding; avoid thin wire hangers long-term.
5. Mind ink and badges — store flat or hanging so prints are not sharply creased.
Framing vs archival storage
Framing is excellent for display but choose UV-protective glazing and keep frames off damp walls. If you frame, photograph labels and details first. For high-value shirts you may never wear or handle, archival boxes with acid-free tissue are a strong alternative.
Travel and shipping
When shipping or receiving a shirt, insist on rigid packaging and moisture protection. Keep your reference code and COA paperwork separate from the garment in a sealed sleeve.
